Our Place

Nau mai haere mai to the website of Newtown School – the multicultural primary school at the heart of Wellington’s liveliest suburb.

For more than 127 years, this school has educated the children of Newtown and its neighbouring suburbs, giving them the broad start in life that all New Zealanders need.

These days that start includes special teaching programmes, a rich multicultural environment and a clear focus on achievement in many areas.

Newtown School provides its students with a well-rounded education that is not available at other schools. We have a Maori immersion class – Ngati Kotahitanga – providing an 80 per cent immersion environment, and our facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, computer suite, and separate junior and senior playgrounds.

We have a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy in both Maori and English, and the vast majority of our students achieve at or above the norms for their age group.

Our student roll is drawn from a rich variety of backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of Newtown, and we pride ourselves on being very much an integral part of our neighbourhood.

Rhys McKinley, principal

Ko te manu kai i te miro nona te ngahere, ko te manu kai i te matauranga nona te ao. The bird who eats from the miro tree owns the forest, the bird who eats of the tree of knowledge owns the world.
